Okay; I tried what michael doyle recommended..... and it worked , I can now mount my zip drive. he said "Hope this helps, goto /lib/modules and delete prefered, if you have already done this, goto usr/src/linux-2.2.5-ac3/Documentation/parport.txt, I had to use the Kmod option here but I dont have a laptop." I deleted preferred when I upgraded from 2.0.36 to 2.2.5 . After reading parport.txt I found that I also had to use the Kmod option . If people are having problems with their parallel ports then reading parport.txt is the place to start .
