It runs almost every standard application, albeit slowly.

VMWare has its own BIOS, and emulates your hardware. IDE, SCSI adapters
work, soundcard works, it emulates a network card, modem works.

There are some special apps that won't work, like some games requiring
graphics acceleration, or special drivers.

Otherwise, if you run it in full screen, nobody knows you're running Linux
;)
