GNOME and KDE are very similar projects. They both use similar object
models (ORBit and CORBA), and no doubt that the future will see their
compatibility. They both use higher level GUI libraries (gtk and Qt).
Both have their own libraries that integrate stuff. And they both have
panels, file managers, etc.
You really can't use more than one desktop at a time, but there's no
reason you can't use GNOME apps in KDE and vice versa.
