I don't know if this will help but I had alot of trouble getting my sound
card to work under the 2.2.5 kernel.

This is what I did to get my sound card to work.

First sndconfig never worked for me I would not use it.
If you go to /usr/src/linux-2.2.5-ac3/Documentation/sound (change
linux-2.2.5-ac3 to your kernel version) you should find your sound card
listed.

My sound card is a crystal audio 4232. The documentation listed 3 modules
to load to enable sound. I tested them at the command line with insmod and
they worked, so I added these lines to /etc/rc.d/rc.local

/sbin/insmod ad1848
/sbin/insmod uart401
/sbin/insmod cs4232 io=0x530 irq=5 dma=0 dma2=1

Now everytime linux boots the sound modules get loaded.

(of course use the correct modules for your sound card)
