I have the same problems, sometimes (not only when transfering files) kfm
fails, but the other running programs continue. The only solution (as far as
I know) is to save your work in the other programs, kill the x server with
ctrl-alt-backspace, and restart it.

I've found a bug in kfm: I was trasfering a file of 50Mb from an ext2
partition to another vfat partition when I try to navigate into kfm-windows
from that files was trasfering ... and kfm hang. I have to close the KDE.
I've tried another time ... instead of try to navigate in the source
kfm-windows I try to navigate the destination win... my computer hang and I
have to reboot (no mouse move).
So now when I transfer a file between ext2 <-> vfat partitions I see and
nothig else!
