The best way to run the system is with two NICs. One will be
assigned the static IP you get from your DSL provider; the other will be
assigned your (also static) private IP.
Now, what I'd personally do is set up a separate machine solely as a
router. There are a few distributions of Linux that are designed to do
exactly that, sometimes requiring only a single floppy to do so. An old
486 would easily be up to this task, and can be obtained for as little
as $30. This way, your net access can continue uninterrupted if you
need to reboot or do maintenance on your main Linux box.
