Since its an external modem, have you tried both COM ports? Also look
into the speaker volume setting. I know it sounds weird, but my USR 56k
external would not work and I would get 'modem busy' messages if the
speaker volume was set to low in Kppp.

Also run modemtool from a command line in X and set the COM port for
the modem there.

In RH5.3 my TNT board works great. It would default to 1024x768x32 bit
resolution. Since upgrading to XConfigurator 4.0, it will default to a
whopping 1152x864x16 bit resolution.
