[expert] Bind Question

I'm playing with my own internal DNS server, and I have one nagging
question.  I made up my own "fake" domain called slacker.admin.  I then
added the cname www to the record. I can ping www.slacker.admin, but I
cannot ping slacker.admin.  Can anybody point me to why this is happening?
