Of course, they always exists, even if you have no sound card : they are
just special files that have some special attribute (a major and a minor
number == a device number).
When you said "all exist", does that means you receive some message like
"no such device", 
"no such device or adress" ? It means that the sound driver is'nt
configured and/or has not found any sound card. 

What say the system about sound ? ('cat /proc/sound' or 'cat
/dev/sndstat').

Maybe some program use ut. What say 'fuser -v /dev/{dsp,audio,mixer}'
