Normally I do my complete system backups (after an upgrade or patch) at
run level 1 -- to minimize the number of files being updated as the
backup is performed. This is a home machine with me being the only
user. So, is it really necessary to be at run level 1? Seems as
though, if I just go away, then the number of processes is still limited
to system ones and root can do the backups just as efficiently. That
is what I would like to beleive, but some faded memory from long ago is
telling me that single user mode is the best for backups -- the days of
using SunOS 4.1.3, but I cannot remember who told me that or why.

So, is it necessary to be in run level 1? If it is not necessary, then
is it better and why?

Thanks in advance for all your help.
