I have an #9 Revolution 3D AGP video card and have the same type of problem. The I128 x-server garbles the text mode. Reboot fixes it. I've e-mailed the author, and he says it's a known bug, so far I haven't found anything to fix it besides a reboot. To cope, I: 1) Stay in X all the time! (not TOO hard...) 2) memorize where important commands are when you do need to be outside of x. (ie cd /usr/local/3Dfx/bin/; test3Dfx to restore 3Dfx card...)
