Provides a comprehensive database of printers.

You are wise to ask before you buy. The "Winprinter" has become common on the
low end of the price range. The Winprinter offloads the thinking part of
printing onto OS specific software, and that OS is Win95/98, less often it
includes Win31 and NT, and rarely, DOS . There are few, if any , software
drivers for Winprinters under Linux.

The box must list DOS separately if Linux/ghostscript is likely to have a
likely workalike. If it doesn't mention DOS, or says DOS programs
can print under the Win DOS box or Win printing facilities, you likely have a
Winprinter.

I just bought a 697C HP at WalMart for a C note on a closeout. May still be
available.
