Of course you can. Don't forget that you will need to create at least 2
partitions to install linux: the root (/) and a swap partition (between
48 and 128 kB). You can also choose to put certain directories in a
separate partition, but this only starts to make sense if you have more
than one hard disk (performance) or if you find yourself reinstalling
linux rather often and you want to keep your home directories and other
stuff.
Also, you will need to boot linux from a partition that resides
completely under the 1024 cylinders boundary (about 2 GB). You can make
a small partition (5-10 MB) for this purpose that you would mount as
/boot then.
