That's not Mandrake-specific: the FBDev is the X server based on the
kernel support (new in linux 2.2) for the frame buffer in the video
board.
On a PC this usually requires a board with VESA 2+ Bios (which
thankfully
has been the case for quite some time for all new boards) so that Linux
can get the predefined values for clock, etc..., and possibly use
Bios routines to _initialize_ the chipset.
For most new boards this means that as long as a mode (e.g. 1024x768x24)
is supported in the Bios, you can have it in X (and for the text console
as well :-) without having to worry about selecting the correct server
for the chipset, etc...
This has been part of the XFree distribution since (I think) XFree 3.2
or so.
