Everyone,
I finally got back to testing my problem with AutoPPP and pppd
authenticating my users.
Restating my original problem, if I had the "login" option in
/etc/mgetty+sendfax/login.config my users would get dropped with "PAP login
failure". If I took out the login option they could get in, but the
/var/log/messages file would not show who had logged in. Likewise the "who"
command only stated "a_ppp".
I have it working better now.... Somewhat. I tried turning off the MD5
support as Axalon suggested, and it had no noticeable effect.
The one thing I did do was to put the "login" option back in the
login.config file and also changed the "-chap" to "+chap". So basically I
had chap and pap selected along with the login option. I then copied my
pap-secrets file from /etc/ppp to chap-secrets also. So the two files were
identical. Before I was just using the pap-secrets file and chap-secrets
was blank.
That allowed everyone to get in. The /var/log/messages file does show who
logged in. The "who" command still only shows "a_ppp". The pppd man page
says that the "login" option should update the wtmp file, but the who
command still shows only the a_ppp. I may be making the wrong assumption on
what the "login" command is for though. It may be the login command only
works with PAP logins, and it seems like my Windows users dialing in are
getting in through chap. I'm assuming that was my problem before. Since I
didn't have a chap-secrets file the Windows users couldn't get in. I was
assuming that windows used PAP.
So basically I have it working well enough for now. It would just be nice
to go that extra inch and have the dial in users show up by login name.
