AMEN!!! And, Windows is JUST as bad about being powered down
unexpectedly. The ONLY thing I can think of is to constantly flush
the buffers of your Linux system so that if you're running w/o a UPS
(C'mon...you can get a GOOD one that'll last you 5 minutes or so
for about $150 US or less!) it'll do less damage to your file system.
Even if you aren't specifically running any programs, there's ALWAYS
something going on in Linux!
