I don't know if you already have checked this issue but it could be
merely hardware related.
My company decided not to use WD's IDE HD anymore because of an
extremely high failure rate with the 4.3GB 5400RPM model. Few of
them failed the first time they were used. Most of them seem
doomed to fail a few weeks/monthes later, with a loud "click"
noise.
