Since you are new at this, make two partitions:  a swap partition
of 65 or 129 MB; and a giant partition for all else.  As your
system evolves (and no doubt you will reinstall things later)
you can take a look at your directories and figure out which
ones need splintering off to their own partitions.

Get dsl.  The problem with cable is that it is all one giant
ethernet network.  Every script kiddie on the city will be
able to sniff/probe your computer.
