No particular error message, just that it does not find the Vortex card
.. as if the module was not included in the boot system.
Since Mandrake is build on RedHat, here is what comes from the RH site
on the Vortex card..
----------
Package: New Boot Images
  Updated: 29-May-1999
Problem: New installation images that correct several Red Hat Linux
6.0 installation
problems are now available. The following problems are solved by this
release:
o ICP Vortex RAID controller driver module missing (bug #2535)
...
-----------
so far my guess is that bug is not fixed in the Mandrake distribution.
It's a drag, so far I found Mandrake better than RH and I have being
with RH since version 3.

again many thanks al, since this machine is the main server of our
faculty, it is a real relief to have some feed back.
