I have no clue about the color issue (unless the default setup of X
misdetected your video adapter and/or monitor), but as for the
sluggishness of the apps problem, does the kernel see all of your
memory? Try typing "free" at a console and see how much mem is reported.
(Of course I realize this is a problem that was fixed back around 2.0.34
or so, but it's worth a shot!)
