You shouldn't have to do that, ever !!! That's what a rescuse disk is

Linear mode is supposed to use absolute sector addresses (without
cylinder and track reference). But it *must* be supported by the
drive itself in the first place, so if you aren't sure better avoid it.
BTW, it must also be supported by the BIOS, since LILO is a 16-bit
program that *only* uses BIOS calls ...
