Just FYI. I ran OSS for a while... and quake3's sound refused to work with OSS.
But OSS worked fine with other audio stuff.
Later I switched to the sound kernel modules instead, and quake3 started to
work.

So I guess it depends on the current state of the sound module (good/bad
coded) and how the applications uses the sound devices.
