Ok I tried that.  The device is /dev/sgd and I changed the permissions on it to
600, then 644.  Could I be doing that wrong.  What permissions does on set on a
device to share it?

In the mean time I'll be looking at sane dox to see if that could be a problem.
 But I get a device not available from xscanimage on the command line.
