Turns out that this seems to be a bug (at least to me) in the
/usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/config.ps file shipped with
Mandrake-6.1.
I replaced this file with the config.ps file shipped in RedHat-5.1,
and, so far everything works as it used to. Don't know if new,
unseen, and undesirable consequences will follow.
