I had something simular, trying to install it on a RedHat 5.1 distribution...
SO freezed.... about everything on the console: monitor, mouse and keyboard.
Solution: reset or reboot through network login.
Never had the problem again using RH5.2 and recently Mandrake 6.0
This does not help a lot.... (i am sorry)
