I do think vmware is a great product and would definitely recommend it to
anyone who really needs to run windows only apps (e.g. visual basic) or
need to do cross platform development. I, however, use windows very little
since, as you said, most things you can do in windows can also be done in
linux now days.
I was merely making sure I didn't shell out $99 or $75 or whatever vmware
costs for students just to do my visual basic homework or test my samba
config when there was or was soon going to be a free replacement for that
software.
