1.  On the "lightning mouse"  Go to /etc/X11/XF86Config and check the pointer
section

If you set the mouse to Glidepoint or to some special setting, change it to
PS/2 protocol on /dev/psaux

Second, back off on the screen settings.  I am not sure why there is an
interaction here, but it happens at some time.  Usually dropping the color
depth OR the resolution OR deleting all but the modeline you will use and then
tweaking the frequency and DACspeed settings slightly can produce a
better-behaved mouse with no apparent loss of resolution or color depth.

2.  On the sound, well, first try reinstalling with sndconfig in single user
mode.  Sometimes other services prevent the proper installation, and this
seems predominant in Notebooks.  If that works, then likely your mixer will as
well

Naturally it would also be a good idea to check /tmp/install.log and assure
that the modules for the mixer and their dependencies all got loaded.
