Thanks,I've got a setup now that I'm pretty comfortable with. 
Basically, I've added/editted a line like
*.*                     /dev/syslog
in the syslog.conf file.  When running X, as root I start a console
like: "xconxole -notify"
It works pretty well, and I set it to be sticky so that it follows me on
different VCs.  Would be greater still if I can get to always stay on
top.
As someone warned me, it's not too pretty when I'm running console
mode.  Simple workaround is to NOT use the first console.
