The files on a ext2 partition are handled thanks to a inode table. Each
file or directory use one inode. Should you have no inode free, then you
can't create any file or directory. This table is created during the
format process.
You can check how much inodes are used with "df -i".
Have you upgraded your Linux system (ie:new kernel...)?
