In normal KDE mount device icons are just normal kdelnks which can be deleted
just like any other file. There is no code in kde which would automatically
create them.
However, some distributions changed it. For example Caldera 1.2 doesn�t install
mount device kdelnks, but symlinks to automounting directories. I guess that
Mandrake has some startup script somewhere which checks which devices exist,
and then creates icons for them if they are missing.
I guess you should check startkde or kde script in $KDEDIR/bin (or
/usr/X11R6/bin) and check if code for creating such icons is there.
