Dear friends: I tried to save a backup as root. In fact, I logged out of KDE and logged back in as root, then launched SO51a from /bin/./soffice, then typed a few lines and saved the file. No problem saving the file. Made sure "Always create a backup" under Options, General, Save. But I could not save a backup, just as when I use SO as a user (I installed it as a user on my separate /home partition). No error messages. Everything seems to be normal, but no backup.
