I was installing one of the last migrations yesterday. Almost all our
computers here now run linux and StarOffice instead of
Windows/MSOffice/ClarisWorks etc. The one I was working on was the
Borough Clerk who was resistant to the idea of switching OSes, mainly
because she had over 800 files in ClarisWorks and no conversion program
save Claris itself --having to read fiiles in Claris, and save them as
Richest Text Format.
I gave her a macro key to simplify procedures so all she would have to
do is hit f9 and click on the file name and Claris would do the rest,
but still the conversions are nowhere near complete. I made hers
dual-boot with a copy of Win98 that knows nothing of how the network is
rigged and has no internet connection route.
Well, we set up the computer, changed the user number and group number
of the files in her home directory to match the workgroup server, set up
nfs shares, set up dos shares, installed StarOffice, installed Acrobat
reader, installed WordPerfect, added icons, applinks and mimelinks and
mime types so SO would pop up when someone clicked on an msword file,
and Acroreader would open when someone clicked on a *.pdf file (and not
PS Viewer). Then an extra hdd was added /dev/hdd and all her old *.cwk
files were saved there. More mounts were created to allow dos to open
under her user and group number on both her dual boot disk and the added
hdd in rw mode.
The time was getting long, but everything was going well. Now
Webmin-0.74 was put into place to allow future updates to be set up from
a different seat. And we were almost done.
I ran sndconfig in single mode and I got a very sluggish Linus. In fact
he was recorded at 78 and played back at 33-1/3.
Oops. Not a great sound card. No problem. I popped it out and tried
another. Now I got an error message about /lib/modules/misc/opl3.so2:
init: or words to that effect.
pnpdump, and rm came to mind and were applied. conf.modules was edited.
Still trying to load the module and init.... The ghost of the Yamaha
chipset was with me.
Restart--Wow--tried to load during boot Well, where is it coming from?
SysV init used to move all sound startups to inactive. And STILL we
have the opl3 trying to load....
Now it looks like I need something to find text in a text file, if it
IS text in a text file.... I look at the clock... This is taking too
long.
Her /dev/hda is like this
/dev/hda1 /dos #810 Mb vfat
/dev/hda2 /boot #23 Mb
/dev/hda3 swap #120 Mb
/dev/hda5 /usr #1200 Mb Acrobat reader is here,
#also all the new applinks
and mimelinks (templates for loading)
/dev/hda6 / #200 Mb
/dev/hda7 /var #54 Mb
/dev/hda8 /tmp #54 Mb
/dev/hda9 /root #54 Mb
/dev/hda10 /opt # 508 Mb WP here and SO main files
here for net install
/dev/hda11 /usr/local # 508 Mb WebMin is here
/dev/hda12 /home #580 Mb Special mounts and Workstation
installs
/dev/hdd1 /home/valarie/mywindowsfiles #3G vfat
So what to do?
I dropped in the Mandrake 6.1 Install CD and did a shutdown -r now
When it came up, I called for a new install
I used Disk Druid to put the mount map back in
and I called for a format of / ONLY, and the packages I had installed
before.
7 minutes later I was using linuxconf to configure the two dos and two
nfs mounts, then I ran sndconfig on an Ensoniq 1371 and was done. I
double-checked mime types, permissions, etc. All seemed to be
preserved, but the opl3 ghost module was gone.
I suppose I could have found the problem in time, but the time it would
have taken .... Well, the careful planning of the job paid off in an
unexpected way.
