I recently went through this same senerio, except with Win95B and WinNT 4.0.
I was unable to see my linux shares from any windows machine, although I
could see it from my other linux machines. What I found out was there
are a million ways to configure Samba, and unless you have everything
set just right for your particular requirements, it won't work.
What I had to do to make my particular configuration work was this:
1) Set "encrypt passwords" to yes. This is because Win95B and WinNT
use encrypted passwords by default. For Win95A PC's they use unencrypted
passwords by default. If you do set encrypted passwords to yes, you have
to set "smb passwd file" to a file with samba passwords (ex. /etc/smbpasswd);
then use the smbpasswd <userid> command to set the password.
2) Set "security" to SHARE. The default is USER, which no matter how
hard I tried I could not make my Windows PC see the shares at that setting.
Once I set it to SHARE, it worked like a charm. Please read the info
on this security setting so you understand the ramifications.
3) Set "map to guest" to Bad User. This way, if you want a publicly
accessibly share, then even if the user types an invalid password, they
will still be able to connect to this share (kinda like anonymous FTP).
You also need to set the "guest account" to some userid which is defined
in your /etc/passwd file (for permissions and what-not), but disable this
account for the system (you don't want somebody to telnet in with this
userid!).
4) Set "lock directory" to some directory on the system (ex. /var/lock/samba).
Not sure on this one, I believe it's necessary though.
One thing that will also help, is to install the gnosamba utility. It's a
decent GUI interface for configuring SAMBA, although it doesn't provide
wizards or anything for your setup. It's just a handy way to make sure
your syntax is right and you can test and restart easily.
