In early versions of SMB, file names are restricted to ASCII, where NT
uses Unicode. NT, on the other tentacle, uses Unicode to store filenames
(on NTFS, anyway. I believe also on VFAT).

Possibly the problem is that NT is sending Unicode file names to the Linux
box, but the Linux box is not displaying them as Unicode.
