I installed LM6.1 on a friend's machine.  It was a 486 with an overdrive and
12 MB of RAM.  Took for ever to install and takes for ever for X to come up
but it runs pretty smoothly otherwise.  Now I don't know exactly the
difference between a 486 overdrive and a standard 486 but I don't think
there is much.

5.3 installs like a champ. Get the updates from an ftp site if you need
them.


I read that Mandrake is "working" on a 386/486 compile of 6.1, but haven't
heard an update in a month or so.
