Didn't say if you wanted to run a GUI or not.
If you want to run console, LM will do fine.  I like console mode, wife
and son like KDE, we compromise with Mandrake and it does what we all
want.

Your older machine should do a good job with it.  If you are not using a
pentium processor, then maybe an older version of Mandrake, say a 5.1 or
5.2 that wasn't optimised for 586 so much.

During the custom install, just choose to not install the GUI.  Maybe
later you might look at an X GUI that is small like fvwm or something
like that.

This way you run the latest, while still doing it "Your Way".  That is
what linux means to me, anyway.
