Did you click a link in Netscape and get knocked back to a login screen?
I have seen this happen twice to users here and it reproduces the symptoms
you describe.
My solution (wipes out some customized settings such as placing
applications on the menubar) with thanks to Steve Philp is:
cd ~
rm -r .kde
startx
I have also observed this on Caldera 2.3. It appears to be some
Netscape/KDE interaction
