According to the website, 
http://www.xig.com/Pages/CardMfgrS3.html, XI Graphics
*does* support the Trio3D better than regular X, but at the
cost (it costs $100 US, plus shipping) you might just want
to invest in a card that IS supported better by Linux. I
recommend the TNT-based cards. You can get a 16-meg
Creative Labs Graphics Blaster TNT card for about $70 +
shipping.
