Samba can either plain-text passwords or encryted passwords.
For encrypted passwords you need to utilise the "smbpasswd" command. Samba has
an smbpassword file so it knows which users are using encrypted passwords. To
setup and encrypted password for a user (Windows default), you type:
smbpasswd -a [username] (as root)
If you don't want to use encrypted passwords (Linux default) you need to modify
the registry on your client Windows machines to MAKE them send clear-text
passwords by default.
In samba, you also need to disable the guest login in your config file.
All the details are in the samba docs (in /usr/doc/samba2.x.x/doc) That will
tell you what needs to be done to get your machines talking.
Hope this helps!
