Sad to say, dissecting HOWTO's is the best way to learn the Linux OS.
It's an uphill struggle, but the more you learn the easier it goes and
the more dangerous you become :-)
Do you have an old 386 or 486 with a floppy drive, two network cards,
and 8 or 12 MB RAM? The best thing to do is to put Linux Router Project
on such a box, forward ports, and leave it alone. If you're still
learning Linux, that RH6.1 box is going to get blown up a few times,
which will shut off your mail and IIS for however long it takes you to
remember how you made Apache and Sendmail act as relays. OTOH, my LRP
has been up for about 40 days now, largely because it's behind the desk
where my son can't reach it :-) "Maintenance" equals logging in
occasionally, seeing who's been blocked by port sentry, and adding them
to my "look out for these addresses" list.
www.linuxrouter.org for the mail list and archives, lrp.c0wz.com for
current documentation.
