Joseph,
I'm not familiar with diald as I spent an hour trying to set it up
unsuccessfully. But are you aware that pppd, which you no doubt already
have installed, has a demand option in the more current versions?
If all you need is on demand dialing that would do the job.
 My /etc/ppp/options:

10.0.0.0:10.0.0.0

demand

idle 240

ipcp-accept-remote

ipcp-accept-local

lock

noauth
# point this at your chat-script
connect "/usr/sbin/chat -f /etc/ppp/chat-script"

/dev/ttyS2 115200

modem

crtscts

defaultroute

noipdefault

I'm not sure if this is the most elegent example but it works for me
with Mandrake 6.0.
Then I can activate it under Interfaces in netcfg.
With ipchains installed it also dials and connects for the kids Windows
machine over the LAN, and disconnects after 240 seconds of inactivity.

 Hope this helps,

        Gene
