Dear Matt and friends:

I have isolated the problem, thanks to Matt Stegman's latest suggestion:

When I type in the console ( but NOT in xterm):

\ls (backspace plus "ls") I get a correct listing of all my files and
directories

Same when I type alias ls. A full listing of files and directories

Same when I type /bin/ls. A full listing of files and directories

My only problem is when I type "ls" by itself. Then I get the following
strange data:

 [home/sher]$ls
 bash: 34mDesktop: command not found
 bash: command not found
 bash: lynx_bookmarks.html: command not found
 bash: command not found
 bash: 34mwp80 command not found
 bash: command not found

 etc. etc.

Every file or directory in my home/sher directory is listed. Some have
a
number plus "m" prefixed to them (usually 34m or 31m) and others just
 list the file name.
