Ok. Assuming your motherboard has an on-board floppy controller. Have
you tried plugging your floppy-based tape drive into THAT instead of
your (I assume) "Aftermarket" Floppy Controller? My *guess* is that
ftape is expecting to be using your on-board floppy controller and
your hardware is plugged into the aftermarket/secondary floppy
controller.
