I've experienced this problem twice at least. I've managed this problem by
editing /etc/X11/XF86config: instead of FontPath "unix/:-1", make
FontPath "/tmp" or whatever directory you wish. Thus you will by-pass
xfs. Restart (or even reboot the comp.) the X server. If the x server starts,
you can get back to "unix/:-1". Reboot and it should start with no
problem. It seems an awkward solution but it worked every time for me.
