Have a look at XFree documentation page specific to CT 65xxx
chipsets: it says explicitly that there are very restrictive
dot-clock limitations (and why).
So this is probably less a problem with the memory amount 
than it is with dot clock, but the result is the same: if
you raise either the resolution or the color depth, the chipset
is unable to follow ...
