Hmmm, well first of all, since you have graphics, use a good editor on
/etc/X11/XF86Config
delete all the modelines you are NOT using--keep the ones in frequency
above and below yours for the same resolution and bpp. Now comment out
all but one, and restart X. Keep doing this till you seem to have pretty
good tune. Sometimes some option statements in the Devices section will
help as well. Consult the information for S3 users at www.xfree.org to see
if you need to try any of those.
This is not specifically a Mandrake problem. XFree 3.3.4 ran some of my
cards fine that required tweaking for XFree 3.3.5 to work with them at all,
and at least one required major trial-and-error surgery on XF86Config to
run with XFree 3.3.6. They are being aggressive at xfree.org with the
drivers, and occasionally we have to delete some "performance enhancements
to make the software work on our not so great hardware.
