[expert] Single user mode?

I had to boot into single user mode just a few minutes
ago. I typed "linux single" or "linux 1" but Mandrake
7.0 still proceeded to the default init level, in this
case 5. 

Why did it not work? I do have "append=ide-scsi
mem=128M" in /etc/lilo.conf.
