Tried this, with no different results, but I may have done something (else)
wrong. First thing I noticed was that my xinitrc file didn't actually
exist. So, I just put the line "startkde" in it and saved it off. startx
brought up the Plain X11 screen.
The annoying thing is that I used the xf86config that came with XF4 and
answered 'no' to the question about virtual screen size greater than the
real screen size, but the stupid thing still comes up with a virtual screen
larger than the real screen size.
So, since I made the cardinal sin of not backing up the old X directory, it
looks like I'll be reinstalling a few things to get X working again....
*sigh* You'd think I'd have learned by now. :)

It sounds like you're starting X from the console. If that is true, try
putting startkde or kde in "~/.xinitrc".
