[expert] Forcing NIC Detection

If the NIC isn't detected upon boot, is there a way to 'force' it? My 3c900
combo gets detected no probs under RH, or Slack, but not Mandrake.  Any and
all help (and maybe an explaination as to why this is) would be appreciated.
