First, the HTML doesn't work well on this list, and really
sometimes causes my replies to be deleted by my own mailer,
leaving you with just a header.

YOu would want to do the followig from console mode

$ man locate

This program (actually slocate or secure locate will show you
files you have permission to access)

$ man whereis

This locates the binaries, source, and manual pages for a command
(these would be files you probably do not have full permission to
access) and would tell you, crudely if you have some particular
software on your machine, as in

$ whereis python

/usr/bin/python
/home/John_Cleese/grail/python/
...

Naturally locate/slocate in this context....

# locate foo

would locate ALL the files with "foo" in then including
/usr/share/sql-bench/data-ATIS/food_service.txt
